This world is full of stereotypes. Boys cannot like pink! Backbenchers are troublemakers! Another such stereotype is that all Taylor Swift fans are teenage girls who love glitter and make friendship bracelets all day every day. Well, I’m certain Malala Yousafzai doesn’t have a Math Test tomorrow (though she would definitely ace it) and Roger Federer probably doesn’t make friendship bracelets in his free time – but did you know that they’re both Swifties(?!) and certainly not teenagers.

Another such person is Malvika Sinha, a lawyer based in The United States, who runs a courtroom by day and defends Folklore (2020) with the same passion at night. Malvika has a warm smile - the kind that instantly makes a person feel welcome. She speaks about her job and her love for Taylor in a way not many can. There’s a sparkle in her expression – a mix of lawyer confidence and Swiftie enthusiasm which makes it clear right away why she’s the perfect person to talk to about breaking stereotypes.

Malvika has been a Swiftie since 2008. In her first year of college her best friend and her were browsing the internet and chanced upon a Taylor Swift song. She remembers being blown away by the fact that a 16-year-old wrote it and also thinking ‘she’s the real deal’.

By the time Taylor released her album Red (2012), Malvika had transitioned into a Superfan! She says she had the song Begin Again was on loop for days because it perfectly summed up what she was going through in her life!

“There’s something extraordinary about the way she is able to evoke the feelings I’m experiencing right now.” says Malvika

When asked about the music she grew up on, Malvika reminiscences, “Classic Rock! My dad was a huge classic rock fan and crazy about music. I grew up on Pink Floyd, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones among others. That sort of music was very different from Taylor’s but really shaped who I am today and still is one of my favourites.”

She tends to like Taylor’s romantic, nostalgic songs like Cornelia Street and describes her Swiftie journey as being ‘fun’. The music evokes the best sort of emotions and has entertained her for years keeping her company through the dark pandemic days.

Malvika’s first Taylor Swift concert was the 1989 tour in Los Angeles just after she graduated Law School! As she describes it,

"It’s one of my fondest memories!”

She also attended the revolutionary Reputation Tour and was one of the first people to witness the global phenomenon known as the Eras Tour which she attended in Glendale, Arizona on the first day of the tour!

Her old law firm used to represent Taylor so she was given a lot of free Reputation merch in 2017!, which she dubs as "pretty cool”.

Taylor’s music allows her to disappear into different worlds for a while and almost resonate with something she’s going through at the moment.

“Even though she’s a billionaire who has very little in common with most of us, she is relatable”

When Malvika tells people she’s a Swiftie, she’s met with some eyerolls but she never shies away from expressing her enthusiasm for things she loves. She says many of her peers are also superfans as well.

While talking about her opinion on the hype and criticism around Taylor Swift, Malvika says it’s fascinating because it shows her influence on modern day pop culture and society.

“Whether you like her music or not, no one can deny her influence and musical legacy. She’s a metaverse unto herself.”

Malvika, along with several others around the globe are living proof that Taylor’s music is not just a temporary teenage trend but it’s for life.

Case Closed.
